You’re newly engaged, the ring still doesn’t feel real on your hand, and suddenly there’s a whole list of things to plan, starting with the dress. If your first bridal appointment is on the calendar (or about to be), you’re probably feeling that gorgeous mix of butterflies and nerves: excited to start, a little unsure what to expect, and silently hoping you’re not going to ugly-cry in front of strangers.
Take a breath. We’ve got you.
At Asher Lane Bridal, we’re a North Texas bridal boutique tucked into the charming town of Bonham, about an hour north of Dallas. Brides drive in from Dallas, McKinney, Plano, Sherman, Denison, and across Southern Oklahoma. A lot of them tell us the same thing afterward: I didn’t know wedding dress shopping could feel like this. Here’s exactly what your first bridal appointment will look like when you visit us, so you can walk in ready to actually enjoy it. (Ready to skip ahead? You can book your appointment here.)
Before You Arrive: A Few Things to Set You Up Right
Choose the appointment style that fits your people
We’re a by-appointment-only boutique, which means you’ll never share a fitting room or fight for a stylist’s attention. We offer two appointment styles, and the right one depends on your group and how you want to celebrate.
Our Semi-Private Experience runs 1.5 hours, includes up to 4 guests, and gives you a dedicated stylist plus time to toast when you find the one. Our VIP Experience runs 2 hours, welcomes up to 8 guests, and includes a charcuterie and sweet board, beverages, and a free gift: a bridal robe or veil to take home. We lock the doors, pour the bubbly, and the showroom is yours.
Both come with the same expert support. The VIP just adds the extras for brides who want to turn dress shopping into a full-on celebration.
Come with hair and makeup done so you feel your best
This one’s totally optional, but we always recommend it. Showing up with your hair and makeup done however makes you feel most like you (whether that’s your everyday look or a little extra) makes it so much easier to picture yourself walking down the aisle in whatever gown you’re trying on. There’s no need to go to a salon or hire a pro. Just whatever helps you feel confident in the mirror.
Wear the right undergarments
Nude, seamless underwear is your best friend. Bring nipple covers or stickies if you’d like, totally up to you. You don’t need a special bra. All of our gowns are constructed with built-in support, so what you wear on your big day is what you can wear in the fitting room.
Bring some inspo, but stay open
Save a Pinterest board, screenshot a few dresses from Instagram, and share them with your stylist when you arrive. Need somewhere to start? Follow our Pinterest for real-bride moments, gown inspiration, and styling ideas straight from our collection. It helps us understand what you’re drawn to. But here’s the truth almost every bride learns at her first appointment: the dress you walk in expecting and the dress you walk down the aisle in are very often two completely different gowns. Let yourself be surprised.
When You Walk In: The Welcome
From the moment you step through our doors, the time is yours. Your stylist will greet you by name and show you to your suite, which will already be set up and waiting. The boutique is light-filled, modern, and clean, built from scratch with your memories in mind. It’s big enough for a dramatic twirl and intimate enough that it never feels overwhelming.
If you booked the VIP Experience, you’ll find your charcuterie and sweet board ready to go and a robe or veil set aside as your welcome gift. The doors stay locked. It’s just you, your people, and the dresses.
Meeting Your Stylist
Your stylist (Melody, Ali, Kaitlyn, or Skye) will sit down with you before any try-ons begin. This part matters more than most brides realize. We’ll ask about your venue, your wedding date, your vision, your comfort level, what you love about yourself, and most importantly, your budget. We stay inside it. No pressure, no upsells, and never a push toward a dress that doesn’t feel right.
The dressing room itself is just you and your stylist. That privacy is intentional. It gives you space to speak freely about anything that comes up: body things you’re self-conscious about, what feels good and what doesn’t, family members who might be vocal once you step out, or the silhouette your mother-in-law keeps mentioning that you absolutely do not want to try on. We hear you, and we’re here for you. Our whole job is helping you find the dress you actually want, not the one anyone else wants for you.
Trying On Gowns
Most brides try on five to eight dresses during a first appointment. You and your stylist will start by pulling a handful based on your conversation, usually a mix of what you said you wanted and one or two surprise picks that just feel like you. You’ll head into the dressing room, your stylist will help you into the gown (yes, even the corset backs and tricky zippers), and then you’ll step out to your people.
Permission to feel a lot. Some brides cry the moment they zip into the first dress. Some don’t feel anything until dress number four. Some try on a gown they were sure they’d hate and instantly know. There is no wrong way to do this part, and there’s no specific reaction that means you’ve found the one. Trust your gut, not the room.
Our gowns start around $1,200 and go up to $5,000 for couture pieces, with samples starting at $500 that you can take home the same day. We carry designers like Madi Lane Bridal, Evie Young Bridal, Colby John Bridal, Jeune Bridal, Serene Bridal, and our signature private line, Uncommon. We’re also adding two brand-new designers to the lineup soon: Jessica Couture and Hikaru Bridal. Whatever your budget, we’ll work inside it.
Don’t Miss a Trunk Show
If you really want to make your first appointment something special, try to book it during one of our trunk shows. A trunk show is when a designer ships us around 20 additional gowns from their newest collection. These are dresses that aren’t part of our regular in-store inventory, and they often come in a wider range of sizes than we typically have on the floor. You get a first look at gowns before they’re fully released, the chance to try on styles you couldn’t see anywhere else in North Texas, and often a special offer that’s only available during the event. Sometimes the designers themselves come in person, which means you can meet them, ask questions, and have a true behind-the-scenes moment. Check out our upcoming events page to see which trunk shows and sales are coming up next.
Saying Yes (Or Not Yet)
Some brides find their dress at the first appointment. Some need a second visit to be sure. Both are absolutely normal, and neither is wrong. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, we’ll never push you to decide on the spot. If you’re feeling certain, we’ll celebrate right along with you, with happy tears, more bubbly, and the whole moment.
And if you do say yes? Get ready for a celebration that you and your people will remember forever.
After You Say Yes
Once you choose your gown, we’ll talk timeline and payment. Hand-crafted gowns typically take 4 to 6 months to arrive, plus 6 to 8 weeks for alterations. We recommend starting dress shopping 8 to 10 months before your wedding so you have plenty of time for both, plus bridal portraits if you want them. If your timeline is tighter, we have same-day samples and 8-week ship options, plus rush orders available with some designers.
You can pay in full at the time of order or split it: 60% deposit and the balance spread across monthly auto-drafts until your dress arrives. We accept credit cards and cash (no checks). And while we don’t do in-house alterations, we’ll happily send you a list of trusted seamstresses our past brides have loved.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a first bridal appointment last?
Our Semi-Private Experience runs 1.5 hours and our VIP Experience runs 2 hours. Both give you plenty of time to try on gowns, sip something bubbly, and make a confident decision without feeling rushed.
What should I wear to my first bridal appointment?
Nude, seamless underwear is ideal. Bring nipple covers or stickies if you’d like. No special bra needed, because our gowns are constructed with built-in support. We also recommend coming with hair and makeup done so you can fully picture yourself on your big day.
How many dresses will I try on?
Most brides try on five to eight gowns at a first appointment. You and your stylist will pull a mix based on your vision, plus a surprise pick or two, because the dress you didn’t expect is often the one you fall in love with.
What is a trunk show, and should I book my appointment during one?
A trunk show is a limited-time event where a designer sends us a special collection of around 20 gowns from their newest line, in a wider range of sizes than we normally keep in store. You get to try on styles before they’re widely released and often score a special offer that’s only available during the event. If you can time your first appointment to a trunk show, do it. Check our events page for what’s coming up next.
Will I be pressured to buy a dress?
Never. No pressure, no upsells, no pushing you outside your budget. Some brides say yes at their first appointment, others come back for a second visit, and both are completely normal. We’re here to help you find the right dress at the right pace.
How many guests can I bring?
Our Semi-Private Experience welcomes up to 4 guests. Our VIP Experience welcomes up to 8. Bring the people you trust to support you and not stress you out. Whoever that is, we’ll make sure they feel celebrated too.
Can I bring my kids to my bridal appointment?
Because our boutique is filled with delicate gowns and light-colored finishes, we’re not able to allow children under 13. If you have questions or special circumstances, give us a call at 903-227-8501 and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
What if I don’t find a dress at my first appointment?
That’s completely okay. Some brides need a second appointment to feel sure, and we never want you to commit to a gown you’re not in love with. We’ll happily book you a follow-up visit and keep notes on what you liked and what didn’t feel right.
How far in advance should I book my first bridal appointment?
We recommend starting 8 to 10 months before your wedding date. Hand-crafted gowns typically take 4 to 6 months to arrive, and you’ll want 6 to 8 weeks for alterations on top of that. Tighter timeline? We have same-day samples, 8-week ship gowns, and rush options.
